Charles Oehrtmann enters his 43 rd year as a music teacher, having
taught music for seven years in New Jersey prior to his arrival in Maine,
and has been teaching music in RSU 14 since 1999. He has taught
orchestra district-wide and has also taught chorus in both Manchester
School and Windham Middle School. He currently teaches music in
grades 4 and 5 at Manchester School and also teaches music at
Windham Primary School.
Mr. Oehrtmann, better known as “Mr.O”, is passionate about music
and wants to pass this onto students, whether they wish to be
performers or wish to listen to music for their own personal enjoyment.
He is an active performer on the double bass, and currently performs
with the Southern Maine Symphony, a community orchestra based at
the University of Southern Maine at Gorham. His past performances
have included concerts with the Midcoast Symphony in Topsham,
where he sat Principal Bass, the North Shore Philharmonic in Danvers,
Massachussetts, the Bangor Symphony as section bassist, as well as
free-lance performances with area orchestras. His journey as an
orchestral musician began on the cello during his freshman year of
college, but later in life he switched to the lower cousin, the double
bass, and has remained as a performer on that instrument for over 25
years. He has also sung with the Choral Art Society of New Jersey and
the Choral Art Society of Portland, Maine.
In his free time, he and his wife Deirdre Oehrtmann, a violinist with the
Portland Symphony, tend to their extensive gardens at their home.
They like to raise vegetables – especially tomatoes, making their own
sauces from scratch. They often go for road trips with no particular
destination in mind.
